The reason "Third Defender" can be confusing to young players is because where the Third Defender should position himself or herself depends on your team's attacking plan.

In Recreational soccer, a great dribbler can be a good Center Midfielder because he or she can usually penetrate the opposing defense, which will cause defenders to move out of position. That will create open space for a teammate to move into.

Star Patches can be given to players who take what they learn in practice and use it.

Keep in mind that some soccer players can look good in practice but not in real matches. For example, a player can have good skills and a good shot, but still not be a good Forward. Small sided play can give you insight as to who has potential for different positions.
